Runic Divination Ritual for Covens

This ritual is used to forecast future events affecting the coven in the coming year.

Materials needed:
  • Set of Runes

  • Altar of wood or stone

  • Four candles - one each of Red, Blue, Black and White

  • Censor for fire of cedar and herbs of choice

  • Basket of loose weave

  • Ceremonial wand

  • Bell

To begin, the Coven leader should cleanse and bless the runes, and place them in the basket on the altar. Place the bell on the altar and arrange the candles in the following positions:

  • Red (Fire) - South

  • Blue (Ice) - North

  • Black (Dark) - West

  • White (Light) - East

Place the censor in the center of the altar and light a fire of cedar shavings and any additional herbs of choice. Light the candles. Ring the bell to awaken and draw the spirits into the runes. Pass the basket through the smoke from the censor and over the North candle, then back through the censor smoke again. Repeat this process exactly the same way by going North to South and East to West (passing through the censor smoke each time also). Say the following incantation during this process:

Spirits of the North, Spirits of Ice, cleanse and protect these runes.
Bless these runes and guide our hands as you will.
Odinn keep the Spirits of the runes.
Blessed Be

Repeat this chant for South/Fire, East/Light and West/Dark. Stir the runes with the wand. Do not touch the runes with your hands after you start the cleansing process. Call on your God or Goddess to guide the runes and your hands to indicate the threads of the Future concerning your Coven or Circle.

Have the members of your Coven form a circle, joining hands around a fire or grouping of candles. (Eight members would be best, as eight runes must be drawn. If your Coven is smaller, have each member draw multiple times until eight runes are drawn, as described below.) Each rune represents a Sabbat, and each Sabbat represents the timeline of the forecasting of the runes. The Coven leader should choose the Sabbat to be represented by the first rune drawn, and then each rune thereafter is drawn in correspondence with the remaining Sabbats.

The leader will enter the circle carrying the basket of runes and will ask the circle to clear their minds and think only of the future and its realms. Starting at the North, the leader will ring the bell and ask for the first member in the circle to choose a rune. Using their right hand, they will draw a rune, memorize it and place it back in the basket.

The leader will stir the runes with the wand again, ring the bell and proceed to the next person in the circle in a clockwise direction. Follow the same process until all eight runes are drawn. The eight runes drawn in order, starting with the sabbat you choose, will forecast the future, each rune foretelling the period from Sabbat to Sabbat.

The Coven leader should draw one additional rune, which will foretell in general for the upcoming year. The circle, still with hands joined, should give thanks to: Odinn, the Spirits, God and/or Goddess. The circle may now be broken.

Write the runes down in the order they were drawn. The leader will read and interpret the runes, separately and as a whole.
